Soup for the Soul

Soup is one of our family's favorite meals....especially this time of year. We like many kinds of soup - chicken noodle, tomatoe, cream of potatoe, chili (we classify this as soup), etc. These soups are not readily available in the grocery store here and so I have had to learn how to make them from scratch. I use many different resources to learn to cook from scratch and I am most always pleased with the end result. Fresh bread, rolls, grilled cheese sandwiches, or a pan of corn bread complete the meal.

When the wind is howling, the snow is falling, and the temperature is dropping there is something very comforting in gathering the family around the dining room table for a hot bowl of homemade soup. Dinner time is our house is an enjoyable time with tasty food and sweet fellowship with one another. All the preparation time in the kitchen is worth it when I hear comments from my family such as..."did you make a double batch"...."may I have some more please?" "mom, you are the best cook in the whole world"....etc.
Do you have a favorite soup recipe you would like to share with me? If so, please use the email me button on the right or post it in the comments.

  1. We love soup in our family too, but it's not too often that we have weather like yours:) We just had some amazing turkey soup after Thanksgiving. Boy was that good!

The funniest thing happened a couple of months ago. Angela wanted to make some soup for a big game night we were having at church. She found this recipe on the internet, and worked all afternoon to have it ready. I wasn't around when she was making it, or I would have noticed that it looked very Cambodian. When we served it that night, the church people were blown away, because it was one of their absolute favorite soups. Angela didn't even realize it, but she was making Cambodian soup! I'll ask her to send you the recipe.

  2. We eat a lot of soups and stews too. One of our favorites is Potato Soup. We also love tomato soup with grilled cheese! I'd love your recipe if you don't mind sharing!

For the potato soup, I don't really follow a recipe, it's just potatoes, corn, ham chunks, diced onion all in a chicken broth and milk base. I thicken it with instant mashed potato flakes.

  3. Hot, home-made soup sounds real good right now! It's been cold and rainy in Visalia for quite a few days straight. CA is setting records for rainfall right now. Rained all day yesterday (Sunday). Highway 198 was shut down and about half of the back parking lot at church was flooded. Great soup weather. Thankfully, April just made some homemade Potato Soup (LOTS of it!) and some Salmon Soup (not as much, because she doesn't care for fish). They both taste great! I'll ask her to send the recipes to you. Wouldn't mind trying the Cambodian soup, too.

An encouraging word is always welcome and much appreciated!
